
Cisco Wireless 9172I: What MR36 Buyers Should Know Before Upgrading
Cisco lists the Wireless 9172I as the migration option for the Meraki MR36.

The MR36 remains a practical access point for many existing Meraki environments. However, Cisco has announced an End-of-Sale date of December 31, 2026 and identifies the Cisco Wireless 9172I as its recommended migration product.
The 9172I is not simply an updated MR36. It introduces a newer radio architecture, Wi-Fi 7 features, 6 GHz capability and different infrastructure requirements.

The 9172I can operate in a tri-band configuration across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. It can also run in a dual-band mode with additional 5 GHz capacity when 6 GHz is disabled.
Its published aggregate frame rate is significantly higher than the MR36. These figures are theoretical aggregate rates, not guaranteed client speeds.
What Wi-Fi 7 adds
The 9172I introduces access to the 6 GHz band and Wi-Fi 7 capabilities such as wider channels, Multi-Link Operation and improved spectrum efficiency.
The practical benefit depends on the devices connecting to the network.
Older Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 clients can still connect, but they cannot use every Wi-Fi 7 feature. The strongest gains are more likely when the deployment includes newer clients, suitable channel availability and applications that can benefit from additional capacity.
Installing a Wi-Fi 7 access point does not automatically make the entire environment perform like a Wi-Fi 7 network.
The 2.5 GbE uplink matters
The MR36 uses a 1 GbE uplink. The 9172I includes a 2.5 GbE multigigabit Ethernet port.
Before upgrading, buyers should confirm whether the access switch supports multigigabit Ethernet. Without a 2.5 GbE switch port, the deployment may not fully use the access point’s higher wired-uplink capability.
The upgrade should include a review of:
- Switch-port speed
- Cabling capability
- Available PoE
- Total switch PoE budget
- Expected client mix
- 6 GHz availability
- Licensing requirements
The access point is only one part of the upgrade.
Power should be checked before deployment
The 9172I requires more careful power planning than a basic MR36 replacement.
The exact behavior depends on the power source and operating configuration. Insufficient power may reduce radio functionality or Ethernet capability.
An MR36-to-9172I refresh should therefore include a switch power review rather than assuming the existing port configuration is automatically sufficient.
Is it a direct MR36 replacement?
Cisco lists the 9172I as the migration product for the MR36, but that does not mean every existing MR36 should be replaced one-for-one without review.
An existing wireless design may need to be reassessed for:
- Coverage
- Cell size
- Mounting position
- Channel plan
- Client density
- 6 GHz strategy
- Switch capacity
- Power availability
The 9172 Series is compatible with existing mounting options, which may reduce installation effort. Physical compatibility, however, does not replace wireless validation.
Does every MR36 customer need to upgrade now?
No.
Keeping or purchasing MR36 units may still make sense when:
- The goal is to match an existing deployment.
- A failed unit needs to be replaced.
- The organization needs spares.
- The project life fits within the remaining support window.
- The existing switch infrastructure is limited to 1 GbE.
- Most clients do not yet support 6 GHz or Wi-Fi 7.
The 9172I becomes more attractive when:
- A new wireless standard is being established.
- The deployment is expected to remain active long term.
- Newer Wi-Fi 7 clients are entering the environment.
- 6 GHz capacity is part of the design.
- Multigigabit switching is available.
- The organization wants to avoid another hardware transition later.
Licensing also changes
The 9172 Series uses Cisco’s newer subscription structure.
Buyers should confirm the required management mode and subscription before ordering hardware. The correct licensing path may depend on whether the environment will use Meraki cloud management, Cisco on-premises management or a hybrid architecture.
Hardware price alone does not represent the full upgrade cost.
Why it matters
The 9172I offers significantly more capability than the MR36, but the value of that capability depends on the surrounding network.
A successful upgrade requires more than swapping access points. Switch ports, PoE, cabling, clients, licensing and wireless design all affect the result.
For an existing MR36 environment, continuing with MR36 hardware may still be reasonable. For a new long-term deployment, the 9172I provides a clearer path into Wi-Fi 7.

What buyers should consider
Before moving from the MR36 to the 9172I, answer these questions:
Are enough client devices capable of using Wi-Fi 7 or 6 GHz?
Does the access switch support 2.5 GbE?
Can the switch provide sufficient power?
Is this an existing deployment extension or a new long-term standard?
Has licensing been included in the upgrade budget?
Has the wireless design been reviewed rather than assuming a one-for-one replacement?
The 9172I is the forward-looking choice. The MR36 may still be the practical choice for an existing environment.
